Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer Jerry Sinclair chosen as this year’s Steel Wheel Stampede Honourary Parade Marshal

Stettler, AB- The 10th Annual Stettler Steel Wheel Stampede Parade will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday June 9, 2018. We are honoured to have Jerry Sinclair as the 2018 Honourary Parade Marshal.

Jerry Sinclair is a rodeo icon like no other. Beginning his career at the young age of 19, Jerry learned to Saddle Bronc in some of the barest conditions on Sunday afternoons with two close friends and their practice horses. Following several attempts in practice to stay on, Jerry finally reached the 10 seconds required to qualify at that time and he was hooked on the adrenalin rush they call rodeo. Entering amateur rodeos in 1969, and winning money at several, Jerry decided to move up the ranks and try his luck in Edmonton entering the Novice Saddle Bronc and open riding at the first pro rodeo in Canada. Placing in one go-round, he found he could win against some of the best riders in the world and it changed his life.

In 1970, Jerry purchased his Pro Rodeo membership and he never looked back. Entering the Calgary Stampede that year, Jerry was not only crowned the North America Champion Saddle Bronc Rider of the Year; he went on to become the Canadian Championship Bronc Rider and was named the Rookie of the Year. Winning all three awards in one year is a feat no other has accomplished and Jerry still holds the record today. Continuing his career, Jerry worked his way through rodeos over the years, even across Canada where he hauled stock to the eastern provinces to participate in the Rodeo East tours. Placing in the Calgary Stampede 11 of his 13 years and qualifying for the CFR three years; Sinclair decided to retire in 1982.

Jerry continued to be active in the rodeo community serving as the Bronc Riding Representative with the Canadian Pro Rodeo Association for two years. He was then asked to become a member of the Red Deer Silver Buckle Rodeo Committee, and was co-host with Diane Finstead on the CKRD television production “Making 8” for 15 years. In 2001, Jerry and his wife Lana moved to the Stettler area where they remained active in local horse events. Invited to an organizational meeting in 2009; Jerry co-chaired the inaugural Stettler Steel Wheel Stampede committee with Ted Nibourg and held the additional position of Arena Director. Jerry remains on the committee today and maintains his Arena Director role.

Jerry has held several other roles in his time with rodeo; including judge, flank man, and pick up man. Inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame as a contestant in 2008, Jerry continues to serve on their Board of Directors.

No matter his fame throughout his career, Jerry continues to remain modest about his achievements in rodeo, including the Steel Wheel Stampede.

“Helping out with this event is a great way to give back to an organization that’s given so much to me,” stated Sinclair. “It’s also a great event for this community.”

The 10th Annual Steel Wheel Stampede parade will start at the Rotary Spray Park at 11am. The route this year has been extended. To see the updated parade route map, visit For a list of events and information on the Steel Wheel Stampede visit
